Don
Remember when former president Trump imposed "travel bans" from countries suffering from serious surges of the Coronavirus and poor or nonexistent health care measures needed to deal with the epidemic spread of the Coronavirus? As I recall back then many in the media, saying the travel ban was improper with Democrat presidential candidate Biden labeling the move "xenophobic" and House Speaker Pelosi along with a few other Democrats calling the former president "racist" for initiating the travel ban... Remember Speaker Pelosi and others commenting how ineffectual the ban was (after they stopped trying to demonize it) because 10's of thousands of people still came into the United States, despite the ban. That was then - This is now - NY Times: U.S. Moves to Restrict Travel From India as Virus Infections and Deaths Surge WASHINGTON — The White House, citing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, announced Friday that it would begin restricting travel from India to the United States next week, a major new test of the Biden administration’s pandemic response. The decision was one of the most significant steps yet taken by the White House in response to the crush of new infections in India, where over 3,000 people are dying each day as citizens gasp for air on the streets. The country recorded almost 400,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday alone. The White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, said the policy would go into effect on Tuesday. The travel restrictions will not apply to citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States, their spouses or minor children or siblings, or to the parents of citizens or lawful permanent residents who are under 21. In retrospect, federal health officials say the decision was one of the best that Mr. Trump made in the early weeks of the crisis. But the restrictions proved porous. Tens of thousands of people still arrived in the United States on direct flights from China in the two months after Mr. Trump imposed the limits. Ron Klain, now President Biden’s chief of staff, criticized the move as an ineffectual “Band-Aid.” And the panicked flight of Americans from Europe ahead of a travel ban that Mr. Trump then imposed on the continent overwhelmed airports in the United States and most likely brought still more infections. The Biden administration has to avoid a repeat of those problems while it tries to rush humanitarian aid to a country that it counts as an ally. The India travel restrictions may prove to be as porous as the China order. Beyond Americans and lawful permanent residents, exemptions include students, some academics, journalists, fiancés and immigrants. People may also travel for humanitarian purposes, public health, national security or to support critical infrastructure. nytimes.com/biden/india-travel-ban.html President Biden has (as had former president Trump) enacted a travel ban from a country where the Covid pandemic appears to be out of control and the in place health care systems appear inadequate to deal with the spread of the virus... I thought Biden, the Democrats and especially the liberal media said travel bans were ineffectual and more so because of the exclusions applying to persons former president Trump allowed to enter the U.S. and that anyone proposing or enacting a travel ban is to be thought of as xenophobic and racist. Where is the negative commentary from those who opposed and condemned the travel bans when Trump was president? President Biden has (Again - the same as former president Trump) outlined clear exceptions to the imposed travel ban that could potentially see "tens of thousands" of people arriving from India. Why are Democrats not at their podiums or media talking heads not frowning at their cameras proclaiming the travel ban, aside from being racist and xenophobic, will be ineffectual because so many people will still be allowed come into the United States? With the pandemic also seriously effecting other countries like Brazil, I'm thinking it is very likely there may be (just like during former president Trump's presidency) additional travel bans from countries that have seen a significant increase of Coronavirus cases or inadequate health care measures to contain the spread of the virus... I wonder if we'll hear the voices of condemnation and disaffection when or if there are more travel restrictions imposed? Yeah, probably not ~
